چکیده

ventional monocultural crop systems often supported by high inputs of pesticides and fertilizers to sustainable agriculture. Although precise definitions of sustainable agriculture vary, one key aspect is a reduction in agrichemical inputs with a corresponding shift to alternative crop protection strategies, such as cultural practices, organic amendments, resistant or tolerant crop varieties, and biological control. Biological control of plant diseases may be accomplished by several different means (Cook and Baker 1983), including the use of introduced microbial biological control agents. Because most plant diseases are caused by pathogenic microorganisms, using a microbial biological control agent to control a plant pathogen involves microbe-microbe interac-

Experimental Evolution as an Underutilized Tool for Studying Beneficial Animal–Microbe Interactions

Microorganisms play a significant role in the evolution and functioning of the eukaryotes with which they interact. Much of our understanding of beneficial host-microbe interactions stems from studying already established associations; we often infer the genotypic and environmental conditions that led to the existing host-microbe relationships. However, several outstanding questions remain, inc...

Can They Make It on Their Own? Hosts, Microbes, and the Holobiont Niche

Virtually all multicellular organisms host a community of symbionts composed of mutualistic, commensal, and pathogenic microbes, i.e., their microbiome. The mechanism of selection on host-microbe assemblages remains contentious, particularly regarding whether selection acts differently on hosts and their microbial symbionts. Here, we attempt to reconcile these viewpoints using a model that desc...

Expression of fluorescent proteins in Lactobacillus rhamnosus to study host–microbe and microbe–microbe interactions

Probiotic Lactobacillus strains are widely used to benefit human and animal health, although the exact mechanisms behind their interactions with the host and the microbiota are largely unknown. Fluorescent tagging of live probiotic cells is an important tool to unravel their modes of action. In this study, the implementation of different heterologously expressed fluorescent proteins for the lab...

Signaling in Host-Associated Microbial Communities

Human-associated microbiota form and stabilize communities based on interspecies interactions. We review how these microbe-microbe and microbe-host interactions are communicated to shape communities over a human's lifespan, including periods of health and disease. Modeling and dissecting signaling in host-associated communities is crucial to understand their function and will open the door to t...

Gnotobiotic Rodents: An In Vivo Model for the Study of Microbe–Microbe Interactions

Germ-free rodents have no microorganisms living in or on them, allowing researchers to specifically control an animal's microbiota through the direct inoculation of bacteria of interest. This strategy has been widely used to decipher host-microbe interactions as well as the role of microorganisms in both (i) the development and function of the gut barrier (mainly the intestinal epithelium) and ...
